My First Blog Post

Whats this all about?

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.

— Groucho Marx.

Contrary to the trends of the day not everything needs to be political. My aim with this blog is to share gaming news and reviews that are not tainted by any form of political opinion. In my opinion video games are supposed to be a refuge from reality, a form of escapism, so I look at them from that angle. Thus when reviewing a game its gameplay comes first – not any kind of message its trying to spread. If you are in to that – if your gaming and your politics do intersect I respect that, but I also pity you – because you are missing out. Peace.

Playing around with EA Origin

The last few days I been playing a number of EA games due to signing up for an EA Origin premium subscription for a month so that I could try Star Wars Fallen Order before dropping big bucks on it. While I was there I thought I’d try FIFA 20 as well, as I still haven’t found a football game that satisfies since the days of Pro Evo Soccer on the original Xbox! Here are my thoughts on the games I’ve tried so far…

FIFA 20

One day someone at EA or Konami will relaise that not every team plays like Barcelona. FIFA (and PES for that matter) can be great fun if your playing with superstar squads but if you support a lesser team and want to play as them its pure drudgery. Players move like they are wearing 50KG ankle weights. You’ll never win a header and the AI controlled opposition will just brush you off the ball like you’re not there. The designers and playtesters for these games need to start testing with lower level teams until they can make it fun – otherwise this is a game for glory hunters only. Such a shame as the presentation is outstanding – and you can really see the potential is there.

Jedi Fallen Order

Not as good as Ashen…

Seriously though again the presentation is excellent, and the first few hours were great. But then you start to encounter difficulty spikes and for me that’s a huge no no – it just breaks the flow of the game. I have high hopes that they can tweak some of the challenges with future patches and if they do this will be an excellent game – but for now I’m uninstalling and heading back to The Witcher 3 (again).

I’ll update this post later after I’ve had a play around with Warhammer Chaosbane – another game I’ve been looking forward too.

Warhammer: Chaosbane

A poor mans Diablo. The issue with making an aRPG is you are going head to head with not only Diablo, but also Path of Exile and the excellent (IMHO) Grim Dawn. Sadly Chaosbane is another derivative title that slaps the Warhammer setting on a run of the mill game. Its such a shame as the Warhammer setting (and 40K for that matter) is beyond amazing. GW own the IP for two of the most fully realised, adored settings in fantasy/sci-fi history – but for some reason making a game that truly stands out has so far avoided them.

Origin Premier

So that’s my play around with Origin Premier. I might try and smash through the Dragon Age games again, and Mass Effect 2 is still great – but there is nothing made or published by EA that justifies the cost to me.
